Why Celebrate Christmas?

Did you know that Jesus was not born on December 25. Most scholars say that Jesus was born sometime in the spring. Did you know that the three kings were called magi or wise men? We do not know if there were only three magi. There could have been more. There could have been less. The Bible never gives a number. Did you know that the magi were two or three years late? They did not make the manger scene, they went to Jesus's house in Bethlehem. We get three because of the three gifts that were given. Gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Did you know that around December 25th there were and most likely still are celebrations that had nothing to do with Christmas. In fact, these celebrations were going on long before Jesus was born. The Romans celebrated Saturnalia. Saturnalia was the celebration of the birthday of the unconquered sun. The celebration was done during the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year. This lasted till the new year or longer. A lot of our Christmas customs comes from the Romans and other pagan celebrations that happen around December 25th.

So why celebrate Christmas?

I love Christmas time! The trees, lights, presents (giving and receiving), the songs, the fellowship of other people, and a lot more. My family decorates the whole house, both inside and outside. There are lots of cookies to snack on well into the new year. We listen to Christmas songs and watch Christmas movies and TV shows. We have a great feast on Christmas Eve with family and friends. All these things are done to remember and to show others what God has done for us. It dose not matter if Jesus was born on December 25,or how wrong our information is. This is the time we celebrate the gift God gave us.Christmas is a time to remember of God's greatest present. Jesus Christ. First John chapter 4, verses 9 and 10 sums up what Christmas is all about, "God showed how much he loved us by sending his one and only Son into the world so that we might have eternal life through him. This is real love—not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins."

This is why we should celebrate Christmas.
